Advantages of Organic Food

Some people may wonder what are the advantages of organic food?

Most people are aware that organic food are free from harmful pesticides and insecticides. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The benefits from farming, producing, and eating organic fruits and vegetables are endless! Let me list a few advantages of organic food.

Here's why.

Farmers who practice organic farming maintain the symbiotic relationship between the soil and plants, thereby reducing waste and maximizing natural production.

They do so by rotating crops, utilizing natural nutrients from the waste products produced by farm animals, and sustaining the natural ecosystem by not stripping the top soil of its nutrients.

Organic Farming is VERY Eco-friendly

Adding on to the first point, organic farming does not disrupt the natural ecosystem found in the soil.

To us, dirt may seem, well, like dirt.

A pile of dust, mud, and pebbles. But that is hardly the case. Untouched and unpolluted virgin soil is rich rich in minerals and, therefore, rich in nutrients. The natural ecosystem supports families of various microorganisms that provide the needed environment for the plants to grow.

Synthetic chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, and inorganic fertilizers interrupt and destroy this delicate micro ecosystem, and strips the soil of the natural minerals.

Once this happens, the soil can no longer act as the nutrient-rich provider, and instead relies on humans for artificial nutrients.

To make matters worse, oftentimes these soil "enhancers" are not even locally made, but are instead trucked over from far off places, thereby adding to the carbon foot print.

Moreover, by using harmful chemicals, humans are creating more work for themselves.

Silly isn't it?

The many advantages of organic food

Going back to the main point, the now barren soil can no longer share its once-abundant nutrients with the plants, which in turn grow malnourished, and become more susceptible to disease, drought, and pests.

Bottom line: using harmful chemicals destroy nature's natural balance of taking care of the soil and plants, and in the end creates more work for humans.

So in the end, opting for the organic path, in a way, saves us more time and creates less work for us down the road.

Organic Option Emits Less Pollution

That's right. By not using herbicides or pesticides which have been known to have noxious effects not only on the health of the farmers harvesting the crop, but also on the consumers, organic farming contributes to a safer and healthier environment for everyone.

More Advantages of Organic Food. Organic Farming Does Not Pose Health Risks

Advantages of Organic Food- If you have to get suited up to apply this pesticide, do you really want to be eating the food that is on the receiving end of this chemical?

One of the chief concerns against using insecticides and pesticides` are the harmful effects, both known and unknown, that the chemicals may cause on our health.

In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitors the sales and use of herbicides and pesticides. They make sure that the chemicals that farms and companies use on their products are within the safety threshold, ensuring the safety of the general public.

However, the EPA, is by no means perfect. They still allow the use of questionable chemicals that are known to have noxious effects. Take for instance, the organic compound Atrazine, which is found in many herbicides used to rid grassy weeds in major crops.

The compound is extremely effective and relatively inexpensive, and is therefore the weapon of choice for numerous farmers across the US, and the world! Trouble arose when various non-EPA sponsored studies linked atrazine with hormonal damages in the wildlife, including amphibians, fish, and reptiles.

In one study, atrazine has been found to produce hormonally confused frogs, which bear "both male and female sex organs." [Source]

In fact, a recent study by the US Geological Survey confirmed initial findings that low levels of atrazine (levels that have been approved by the EPA) does in fact affect the reproduction of fish. [Source]

Some studies have linked atrazine with human birth defects and endocrinological problems such as menstrual problems.

Although additional studies establishing adverse effects of atrazine on humans need to be done to offer stronger evidence, studies showing the implications of atrazine on animals are enough to keep me away from atrazine-sprayed products.

Organic Provides Health Benefits

Although some critics may argue otherwise, studies have shown that organic food tastes better and possesses far more nutrients than, say, conventionally grown food.

By growing the plants on mineral and organic-matter rich soil that hasn't been stripped of its nutrients or contaminated with nitrogen and pesticide, farmers are able to yield fruits and vegetable that are high in nutrients and richer in flavor.

Organic Supports Local Farmers

By purchasing organically and locally grown food, you're not only helping your family, but also supporting your local farms and encouraging them to continue bringing us the freshest produce to the marketplace.

Organic Farming Encourages More Organic Food!

Your support will encourage the production of more organic food, and will play a pivotal role in putting pressures on other non-organic farms to do the same.

Given all these reasons and advantages of organic food, why not go natural?
