The daiquiri is sort of like an umbrella clause referring to drinks made primarily from rum, lime juice, and
some kind of sweetener.
The Daiquiri was apparently named after both a beach and an iron mine in Santiago, Cuba that shares the same name.
The cocktail is thought to have been invented in Venus in Santiago, a bar located not too
far from the mine, by a bunch of American mining engineers.
It is often cited that the drink became popular around the time of World War II during which
the wartime rationing made hard liquor such as Whisky scarce.
Moreover, president Franklin D. Roosevelt's
Good Neighbor Policy opened up trade with with Latin America, the Caribbean, and Cuba, thereby
allowing rum to be more easily available.
