Dark and Stormy
The Dark and Stormy (aka Dark 'N' Stormy) is an alcoholic drink consisting of dark rum and
ginger beer served over ice or "on the rocks."
The drink is popular especially in Bermuda and Australia.
In fact, the drink is a registered trademark
of the rum company Gosling's Brothers Limited in Bermuda, and is considered Bermuda's national
drink.
I haven't had much luck finding organic ginger beer, at least in the US.
An
Australian company under the name of
Red Dragon Inn
makes
Organic Ginger Beer. Unfortunately, they only ship within Australia.
But, don't worry. The alternative is to make your own.
Here's how.
How to Make Organic Ginger Beer
Ingredients
- 45 grams of root ginger, which is about a handful
- 6 teaspoons of cream of tartar
- 2.5 cups of sugar
- 1 Lemon
- 4.5 Liters of Boiling Water
- 1 packet of quick yeast
Note: You can also substitute the cream of tartar for egg whites. I also like to use a combination of
lemon and lime into the mixture, which just gives it a bit more of a zesty and tangy flavor.
Instructions
- Add the ginger, cream of tartar, and sugar into a large bowl
- Pour the boiling hot water over them
- Let the mixture cool
- Squeeze the lemon juice into the mix and stir
- Activate the yeast by pouring in warm water
- Add the yeast to the bowl
- Cover the bowl with a muslin and leave in a warm place
for one night
- Strain the liquid into a bottl
- Wait 48 hours and then serve

How to Make a Dark and Stormy
Ingredients
- 2 oz. of Organic Dark Rum
- 1 oz. of Organic Ginger Beer
Instructions
- Fill a highball glass with ice
- Pour the dark rum over the ice
- Top off with ginger beer
