Mai Tai Recipe
The Mai Tai is an alcoholic cocktail containing white and dark rum, curacao, and lime juice.
Like the Pina Colada and
Hurricane, this is a popular
tropical drink, however, it can be enjoyed anywhere where these
ingredients are available.
Meaning "good" in Tahitian, the Mai Tai was invented at the Trader Vic's in Oakland, California in 1944.
The cocktail is usually served in a
highball glass, however, I have seen it served in
hurricane glasses,
coconut shells, rocks glasses, etc.
Moreover, the drink has played a huge, if not, central role in the
Tiki Culture. For those of you
not familiar with the tiki culture, the term refers to a Polynesian, almost tropical theme used in
restaurants and clubs in the US.
Tiki styled restaurants can be found mostly in the West Coast, and all over
Hawaii. The interior decor consists of
tiki torches, coconut shells, hula girls and dresses. Basically anything that reminds you of the
polynesian beach.
The Mai Tai's quintessential role in the tiki culture makes this a signature drink that's hard to miss
at these venues touting a tropical theme.
As with most drinks, there are different variations to this cocktail's recipe. But the main theme that
remains consistent is the use of
light and dark rum mixed with a dash of lime juice.
Don't forget the simple syrup which adds a hint of sweetness to the drink. Don't add too much as that will
end up masking the flavor of the rum.
