Rum and Coke or Cuba Libre
Rum and coke, or Cuba Libre, is a popular drink simply because it's so easy to make, and easy on the
palate.
Also, if you walk into
a bar and order this drink, chances are the bartender will know how to make this drink, and you won't
run the risk of being misinterpreted amidst the loud music or noise.
Trust me.
This happens more
often than you think.
There are differing accounts as to the
origins of the Cuba Libre.
According to Bacardi's website,
the drink was first popularized during the Cuban War for Independence in 1898.
Apparently, several
American soldiers witnessed Capt. Russell of the US Army order the said drink at the American Bar in Havana.

Some argue against this story because of discrepancies in the exact timeline because although the
war for independence was fought in 1898, Coca Cola did not become available in Cuba till 2 years later in 1900.
Regardless of its exact origins, the drink has since become one of the most popular drinks.
There are many different variations to the cuba libre. For instance, you can make it using diet coke and rum,
Dr. Pepper and Rum, and even Root Beer and Rum. The possibilities seem to be endless.
You may wonder what sort of soda you could use to make this drink slighty healthier. After all,
Coke is leaden with sugar and
high-fructose corn syrup which I would try to avoid at all costs.
Fear not.
There are healthier alternatives.
Try
Zevia, an all natural soda that uses
Stevia as a natural sweetener. It's not
organic
per se, but the soda is made from
100% natural ingredients, contains 0 calories, and no sugar.
You can also use
Chill Soda, which comes in many different flavors including
