Rum Runner Drink

The Rum Runner is a popular, fruity drink. Usually served in a hurricane cocktail glass, it can either be shaken or stirred.

The drink can also be served over ice or served as a blended drink like a pina colada.

I've seen a variety of recipes out there, but the one I listed below is the standard method of making this drink.

The basic ingredients for the rum runner drink are: rum, blackberry brandy, banana liqueur, orange juice, and grenadine or Falernum.

If you can't find organic banana liqueur, simply use banana extracts. It's pretty much the same thing, sans the alcohol content.

Now, you may be wondering what the heck is falnerum?

It's a type of sweet syrup used in quite a few rum-based cocktails.

It is flavored with almond, ginger, cloves, and vanilla. You can get this syrup with or without alcohol.

Unfortunately, I haven't come across any organic falnerum, so you're going to have to Do it Yourself.

Here's how.

To make a small bottle worth of Falernum (which should last you forever), you'll need the following ingredients.

  • 10 oz. of Organic Rum
  • 55 cloves
  • 1 Nutmeg
  • 1 Tablespoon of Allspice
  • Handful of chopped ginger
Instructions- Rum
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat
  • Add the cloves, allspice, and nutmeg and roast for about 3-5 minutes
  • Add the spices and ginger into the rum
  • Cover with a mesh, and let the mixture soak overnight
Instructions- Adding the Syrup
  • 1.5 cup of Pure Cane Sugar or Stevia
  • 1 Cup of Water
  • 10 Drops of Almond Extract
  • 5 Drops of Vanilla Extract
  • Add the water and sugar into a pot, and heat over medium-heat
  • Strain the soaked mixture into the syrup using a mesh or a cheese cloth
  • Add the almond and vanilla extract
  • Enjoy!
Now that we have our home-made, organic falnerum, let's jump to the rum runner.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 oz. of Light Rum
  • 1/2 oz. of Blackberry Brandy
  • 1/2 oz. of Banana Liqueur

Instructions
  • Fill a shaker halfway with ice
  • Pour all ingredients into a shaker
  • Shake well
  • Strain into a chilled hurricane glass
  • Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cocktail umbrella
  • Serve
